Protecting People and Places | OPW in the Community in 2019

By OPW | Jan 23, 2020

In 2019, OPW employees around the world found ways to give back and help protect people and the environment. Below are a few highlights from our sites in China, Wisconsin, Ohio, India and the UK.

China:

As a leading enterprise in the industry, OPW in China has been enthusiastic about public welfare and environmental protection. In November and December, OPW Suzhou employee representatives participated in a charity running event, and an environmental protection activity advocated by the Suzhou Industrial Park government.

With the charity running event, OPW and all participating companies donated application fees to help improve the lives of children in poverty. During the environmental protection event, the OPW China team participated in the environmental protection knowledge competition, consolidated the garbage classification method at their site, and actively cleaned up the roads while jogging around Yangcheng Lake. In this "competition," it was not about who was the fastest, but who picked up the most garbage.

Below are pictures from the two events:

DePere, Wisconsin:

Once again, PDQ and Dover teamed up to become Platinum Sponsors for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, sponsoring two wishes for local children battling critical illnesses.

“As you know, wishes are powerful experiences for children, filling their lives with something positive and uplifting during dark and challenging times. For many, their wish marks a turning point in the fight against their illness!” said Kris Teofilo, Northeast Wisconsin Regional Director for Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Lori Leith, HR Manager for PDQ said, "It’s a powerful experience when you see the smiles on these kids faces. This year, I received a voicemail “thank you” from one of the Wish Kids and a volunteer. It made my heart happy to hear that!"

Hamilton, Ohio:

Retail Fueling, Civacon, Corporate and DBS employees participated in a blood drive in May. According to Hoxworth, the blood donations collected during the drive had the potential to save the lives of more than 48 patients in hospitals across the Greater Cincinnati area.

Additionally, the winning Imagine | What's Next team chose to give their $2,500 charitable donation prize to Shared Harvest Foodbank, and the gift was matched by the Dover Foundation for a total of $5,000 gifted to the Fairfield, Ohio foodbank.

India:

This past year, the OPW India team worked on two community projects.

For the first project, OPW India joined forces with other Dover India OpCos to help lessen the ‘digital divide’ in their communities by partnering with their IT department to conduct a PC donation event.

The major objective of the event was to promote computer literacy and to expose and orient students towards computer operation, helping prepare them for a digitized world. Qualitative Computer Education can help enhance these students' interest in education, improve their performance in mainstream education and expand opportunities for higher and technical education, as well as help them find employment.

This activity was chosen due to the complete absence of computer education in rural schools in India, and the team helped introduce these students to technology and digital skills.

For the second project, the OPW India team once again teamed up with other Dover India OpCos to hold a Diwali fundraiser to support local organizations that help children in need. Many tribes situated in and around Mumbai lack proper education, but have unique artistic skills. Through fundraising sales, the tribes are able to improve the lives of their future generations by farming and selling unique artistic artifacts. In particular, this fundraiser supported the Tribals of Raigad district by arranging sale of their products at Dover India sites for employees to purchase.

United Kingdom:

Fibrelite employees in Skipton, UK, held a Christmas Jumper Day, where employees paid £2 to wear Christmas jumpers (aka sweaters) to support Save the Children, an international organization that helps children stay safe, healthy and continue their studies. This organization leads the way on tackling community issues like pneumonia, hunger and protecting children in war.

Below is a picture of Fibrelite team members wearing their Christmas jumpers for a good cause.
